On 2 July 1776, 229 years ago today, the Continental Congress, with John Hancock as its president, decided that a declaration of independence from England should be made. John Adams expected that this was the day that we as a nation would celebrate.
On 4 July 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed by John Hancock and his secretary. Theirs were the only signatures until the official parchment copy was signed on August 2.
God, please bless our nation.
