E and I are driving into central Houston and teaching reading to twelve kids for an hour and a half a day three days a week for two weeks.

These kids are all first graders and should have been reading for a full year. But only one knows anything more than the letters. So we’re doing letters with them. We learn an alphabet song that tells them the major sounds for the letters. We read a book. We do a Mother Goose nursery rhyme. Today we did “Little Bo Peep.”

Tomorrow we’re doing “Jack and Jill.” I need to take a crown with me in the morning.
