I am an American. A free American. Free to speak – without fear. Free to worship God in my own way. Free to stand for what I think is right. Free to oppose what I believe is wrong. Free to choose those who govern my country. This heritage of freedom, I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind.
As a young public school student during the 1940s I remember the entire student population being taken outdoors on the grounds of P.S. 47 The Bronx where we recited “I am an American…” It was part of a city wide celebration of our citizenship.
